Doing over a 1962 X racer and find it has a 5.38 gear. I assume it is a series 4 housing. Is there a code for this or is it a dealer option? It has the P on the case.

No, it's a production "P" housing, but with an aftermarket gearset; if the Posi unit is original, it's a Dana, but Eaton makes a drop-in unit these days. Can't imagine a Dana surviving under the kind of use you know it got with 5.38 gears.

wow...anyway to drive that thing around the block just for grins before you take it apart?
that would be a real treat....
Back in the day..... My first Corvette was a 62 ex-drag car. Since it was my only car (I was 19), I made it only as street legal as it had to be.
The end result was a street racer running 4.88 gears. 4 mpg was the best it would do. I had to fill the tank every day, but with gas at .40 @ gal, it was somewhat affordable....
I has the same thing going on with my car. I was told it was a old drag car. I have 488 gears. I drive it around anyways. not as fun as you would think. can you just replace the center section (complete 3rd member) with a passenger car unit or are the axle splines different?

1955 to 1964 center section from any full size Chevy or 1956 to 1962 Corvette is a bolt in. All the axles were the same except one is longer then the other.
