Default Radial Tire Conversion Question

Hi All, New to the forum, and a Newbie to C2 Family. Recently acquired a 64 coupe 30K original miles, has bias ply 6.70 x 15 tires on factory knock offs. Looking to replace with radials but would like to have a little wider foot print as well. Can i safely install 215 70/15's without worrying about rubbing or scraping? Looking to purchase the tires this week so any info appreciated.

Thanks
Rick Murray

Hi Rick,

I also have a 64 coupe and i'm currently running 225/70/15's on factory knock-offs... they fit perfectly with no problems...

Also no idea on your budget but i'm currently running Avon CR6 ZZ tires... They are road legal super soft wet weather racing tires... The difference over standard radials let alone bias plys is unbelievable... the level of grip in dry or wet conditions is amazing... Probably the best thing i've done to my Vette!

Hope that helps, Luke

Luke thanks for info. Just curious how does the 225/70-15 fill the wheel well? I don't want the dwarf look from too low a profile. Your 225 is two sizes up from 205 which is closest to original bias tire size if I'm reading these conversion charts correctly, and you say no issues on factory knock offs even at full turns?

Hi Rick,

Here's a link to the tires that i'm running to give you a better idea of their size and appearance...

http://www.avonmotorsport.com/historic/road-legal/cr6zz

I actually made a mistake before... my tires are 225/65/15... i was deciding between that size and the 215/70/15.. but the 225 are fatter therefore i went for them...

The tires are not low profile at all, personally i don't like the low profile look on C2 vettes... i wanted a tire that looked like a fat 60's race tire but with modern day compounds and performance...

I think the tires fill the wheel wells really nicely... On extreme steering lock there is very slight rubbing but it's not at all noticeable for normal driving... and as i said before the performance is amazing...

If i knew how to post pictures i'd upload i pic to show you how they look!

I have pictures on my iphone... anyone know how to upload a pic to the forum direct from iphone>?

Hope that helps, Luke

Hi and welcome to the forum, some great people on here and tons of good info in the archives.
I have 215/70/15's on my '67 without any problems, bigger than that and you have to be careful.

215/70ZR-15 Pirelli 4000s on my '65 with knockoffs. These tires must be special ordered and are produced once a year when pent up demand calls for a special production run.

Your car looks great! I'm going with yours and the other recommendations for the 215/70/15 The way they look in your pics is exactly what i'm looking for... I like your idea about four tailights with Backups removed. Did you wire parallel with the tailights?

Thank You I still like it a lot....
Yes....I wired them parallel...IMHO there is not enough
light back there...day or night....went with 2157 bulbs and
It is plenty bright now....I feel safer....plus it looks cool.

The tire rubs the frame on the right hand side during hard right
lock....I live with it...
