Maybe I am stupid, but after reading about anything I could put my hands on, I still don't understand how to remove this stick from the shifter assembly on the M20 WHILE everything still mounted in the car. Anyone could help?
the purpose is to pull the engine/transmission as a whole out of the car (plse don't debate about the pro's and con's versus engine only, I've read all of them )
I could be wrong but I think you have two options. You can drive out the pin that is shown in the first photo. That should allow the shifter hand to be pulled completely from the lever mechanism. It looks like it needs to be taken apart and cleaned anyway.
Secondly, crawl under the car and remove the shifter arms from the transmission and then unbolt the shifter from the tailhousing. The shifter will just drop out from underneath the car. This is the way most guys take it out. Then you can still pull the engine and transmission together.

Option 1 did not work...
Option 2 I found out before reading your response, in the meantime it did manage but it's quite an undertaking Many things have to come out first , it's actually only one bolt that holds it together, but that one bold it hidden behind many many things I'll document later for the next 'victim'

Hey Ale is right. option 2 is what we did in the shop in the early 70s when we got lots of 60s C2 work. Replacing clutches was the big deal as everybody was beating the snot out of them at the time. It was easy peasey after you did it a few times. Pull the drive shaft out from the rear, unbolt the tranny mount on both top and bottom and remove that peskey exhaust bracket that held the dual pipes in place. Then the tranny would drop down to the crossmember, a slight pry would put the tranny to the passengers side. Then either the stock linkage or Hurst linkage would come out fast. The thing to remember is remove it all together from tranny. The big deal in the 70s was everyone was running a 621 bellhousing and an 11" clutch.
