My 67 has numerous dings and scratches on the chrome around the shifter/ashtray area and the glove box door. Are the repair kits sold by the aftermarket catalogs (Zip) worth trying? Are they worth the effort? The prices for new replacement doors and consoles are crazy!
Thanks

I think the refurb kits are worth trying especially if yours are in bad shape. Some will say the aluminum brush marks are not original looking and they do vary from supplier to supplier. I bought the glove box and console aluminum repair kits from Zip several years ago. A little spray paint, new hardware and elbow grease can make a world of difference. My chrome is not perfect but cleaned up and with new paint and aluminum it's not so noticeable. Here are a few pics of my refurbished glove box and console.
Yeah, it makes a HUGE difference doesn't it. Don't forget to order a new shifter boot if yours doesn't look as good as Mikes. Also google Corvette Magazine (sponsored by Zips) to look at the how to tips. Old forum posts will also have lots of info. Good luck.
yep, got it already; mine is indeed worn out. Installation to follow. Thanx for the mag and forum post tips. will definitely come at this project with as much advice as poss.
Is there any trick to putting on the aluminum plate for the shifter and shift pattern on the shifter console? How best to get off the old, and what to clean up the base with before applying new ones?
Thanks.
I just used a screw driver to pry off old old one and used carb cleaner and a putty knife to remove old glue. The new plate has an adhesive backing, just center it and press it down.
I just completed painting my console for my 64 coupe. I removed the old paint with lacquer thinner and nylon brush to get the old paint off and it worked good. You may have to use a razor blade to pick at small specks of paint left by the thinner but softened up.
Final cleanup with lacquer thinner right before painting to remove any oil or fingerprints.
I took some time and got the tape as close as possible to the small grooves on the console to keep paint out. I just took the tape off today and it worked very well. Takes some time though, don't rush it.
I used an etching primer and Corvette America dye/paint, several light coats are best of course. Don't have any pictures yet maybe get them soon.
The corvette America paint is kind of dull, maybe others would be different results.
