Default linkage Question

How much side to side movement is there supposed to be on the clutch cross shaft or bell crank shaft. I can move it back and forth about an inch on the ball studs. Is that normal?

You should always state what year car you are working on and if the area in question is original.

I just looked at my '67, and I don't think anything changed up to '67 in this area. On the frameside you should have a felt washer on the inside end of the shaft, on the engine side you should have a rubber seal inside the shaft. This altogether should allow about 1/2 in. horizontal movement if needed at all during driving. Lets see what others may say. Dennis

There shouldn't be ANY lateral slop in the Z-bar mounting; there are two nylon ball seats and a stout spring retainer in the frame end of the tube that retain the outboard ball stud inside the tube, and the nut on the outboard side of the frame bracket secures the outboard end of the ball stud to the bracket.

Thanks, I checked my manuals and I see the parts that johnZ is referring to, so the next step is to take it off and see what is inside or not. The side to side play I have I think is excessive.
