I have just put a early 80's 350 cu inch engine in my 62 corvette with stock dash gauges. I am having problems with the temp reading being too high with the 350 temp sensor (located on driver side) below exhaust manifold. It will run at 210 all day long. I think it is a mismatch to the gauge. What temp sensor should I use to match the gauge? I do not have an original one.
How do you know it's too high? Did you compare actual with an IR gun? Maybe it really is 210 and the gauge and sender are correct.
I did use an IR gun and I find 180 right at where the thermostat is - 160 at the radiator. It gets warmer to 190 at the back of the engine but I would expect that. That's why I don't think it actually overheating. The original stock gauge read just fine with the last motor I had in there but unfortunately I sold that motor with the temp sensor in it - never thought of keeping it till it was too late. I'd like to find out a suitable substitute for it. Since the car NOM I really don't need an authentic one - after market replacement would be OK.
Head water temperature will usually be 20 degrees gotten than at the intake. My buddy had a nova with a temp gage in both for some reason (he bought the car and it must have has a dozen autometers in it, odd..) but I do recall 185 at the intake and 205 on the head when putting a new motor in it.
Most of the temp sensors available today are not calibrated correctly for the C-1 gauge. I finally contacted Mary Jo and bought a used original sensor and my gauge now works perfectly. If I recall correctly the original sensors have a dimple on the bottom.
