I saw a few C-1 s done like that back in the sixties and early seventies before the dash pads were available. Personally I didn't like the look as they're are too many seams and rough surfaces.
I have seen a few very well done custom dash pads made from leather and vinyl with sewn seams . Some looked very nice with the sewn seams instead of the molded vinyl.
This would look like hell as there are too many gaps and seams to pull this off.
Billy Dawson makes a molded fiberglass dash overlay that looks great. You can either paint it, or sew up a custom leather upholstery for it. It is easily removable, since it is not glued in place like an original dash.
This is a kit car from 2007 Hot Rod Power Tour. Car looked nice, but as I got up close I found lots of trim figment issues as well as other things that really lacked attention to detail.
The painted dash looked ok....certainly different....
