Default Starter Question

Does anybody know if the starter bolts were silver, or black phosphate? A buddy is trying to top flight his 65 L76 and the judging manual said black phosphate, but none of the vendors sell them that way. LIC's told him that they were silver, and that the judging manual was wrong. Any body have any thoughts?

I don't have an answer to your question but if it is a Chapter judging event, 99 percent of the judges can't get under the car to view the starter mounting bolts. If they were able to see the bolts, what would be the deduct, 1 point?

Every starter bolt I ever took out was dull silver cad. NCRS is never wrong.

Thanks for the replies. He is planning on going to the regional meet at Old Town in Kissimmee Florida in January. He is almost finished with a complete frame off, and he just wants to clean up as many loose ends as he can before judging.

I completely agree.

Over the years, I cannot count the number of Chevy engines (and Pont & Olds) that I've torn down. To the best of my memory, NONE of them had black bolts attaching the starter to the underside of the block. They were all various degrees of silver (as in cad or zinc plated) and/or rust.
Sorry, can't remember on bell housing mounted starter bolts.

No offence is intended, but who cares about the color of the bolts.
All starter bolts for any Gm car in the 60s or 70s had a knurl just under the treads. If that knurl was not there it was not a starter bolt. As I remember the knurls located the starter, Pontiacs and Olds needed shims under the knured bolts. I repaced many and made tons of money.

Thanks for all of your replies. You guys(and LIC's) were right.......the judging manual is wrong, and the new manual will state that the bolts were a silver, cad or zinc plate.
