I know that you folks are tired of PCV questions and I have searched the forum and found a lot of posts on this. I just have a quick question. A buddy of mine is looking at putting a 350 crate motor in a 65. He is planning to drill a hole in the rear of the lifter valley and running a tube up to the air cleaner. He will use a 65 intake and a stock oil filler tube with the closed cap and a line to the PCV and on to the carb base. It looks to me like this will be very much the same as the original system that my car has now. I assume that this will be a "closed" system and it should work for him. Am I correct on this?
Correct?
Yes and no. It will function as a crankcase ventilation system, BUUUUUUUUT, you CANNOT just drill a hole in the rear of the lifter valley and insert a tube. WHY??? Because the manifold vacuum in all probability will suck oil from the lifter valley. Some kind of baffeling will be needed where the tube goes into the lifter valley so that oil and vapors will be seperated. If you're familiar with the PCV system on 67-earlier or 68-later small blocks, then you're aware of the vapor canister (internally baffled to seperate oil from vapors) that was installed in the lifter valley of ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL 67-earlier engines, or the baffeling on 68-later valve covers just under the hole for the grommet where a PCV valve is inserted.
I faced the same issue when I put a zz4 crate engine in my 66. I didn't like the ugly steel valve covers that came with the zz4. I got some sand casted covers that look a bit like the finned ones from PDL and had them machine holes for PVC vales on both - they were designed with spots for the PVC. I then ran the tubing to a T and ran the T to the carb.
Thanks for the feedback. We plan to drill into the block at the backside of the lifter valley. There is a nice sized area at the right rear that will accept a good sized bulkhead fitting. From there, we plan to go up to the air cleaner. Inside, we have a stock canister from his old 327 that we are adapting to the bulkhead fitting. At one time, I found a post on here where someone fabricated a similar system and they made their own canister. Now, I can't find that post again. I rarely have a lot of luck searching here. If someone recognizes that post, it would be great to have the link again.

That's the one thanks. I use several of these forums between my Corvette addition and my old British motorcycle addiction. Searching effectively is always a problem. I must be missing something.
