Our development crew was always looking for more top end, and our Aero guy was Larry Rathgeb (same guy who did the aero development on the original Dodge Daytona and Plymouth Superbird); it worked on the "wing" cars, and sure enough, it worked even better on the Viper. Same reason the 2003-up Vipers have a full belly pan - 3 pieces, 46 screws.

I tend to agree with Bill. When I built the hood scoop/engine cover on my 62 I had planned on having the scoop facing rearward just like the Trans Ams because that's the type scoop I used. But have noticed when driving in the rain(not by choice) the air down force the windshield has. The rain will come 3/4 the way up the hood and just stop.

Actually I believe the '56 SR-2 had 'em first - and they were functional...

probably the BIG reason they aren't/weren't functional is that when it rained the engine compartment would have been soaked...

I know it's an old thread...but somewhere it's written that Duntov said the open louvers would allow oil mist from the engine to land on the windshield...not good.

Do you know any 1958 Corvette owners that have added functional hood louvres?

I don't know if any one has , but it would weaken the structural rigidity of the hood .
