When the flatbed showed up the driver was concerned about winching it on the bed without damage. He ended up using large "J" hooks behind the lower A arms and I removed the front license plate frame so the nylon straps would clear.
In the event I need another tow is there a better place to attach? The slots in the frame rails are too high to give the right angle for winching.
I had to have mine towed last winter for the first time and went through the same thing. While waiting for the flatbed I had my wife bring out some towels and tape and I wrapped the lower a-arm with a towel and tape on both sides. Sure enough he had the hooks also and I asked if hooking the a-arms where they were wrapped would work - he said no problem. I actually crawled under and secured the hooks over the a-arms and towels. I put some towels on top of the chains under the valance but didn't have any problems with making contact.
Once on the bed we looked at how to tie the rear down and I didn't want it chained to the halfshafts or trailing arms. He spied the anchor holes in the main crossmember behind the seats and said he thought he had the "T" hooks that those were intended for. After fishing around in his toolbox he pulled a couple out and they slipped inside those holes perfectly.
Once home I got it up on my lift and looked at it and except for a couple tiny chips in the frame paint around the lip of those rear anchor slots (virtually invisible) I didn't have any damage to my painted frame surfaces. The guy did a great job for me.
The lesson I guess is to carry a few old towels and some tape with you.

I appreciate how some of you guys are so **** over your car, but I can't see me getting a headache over chipping or scratching some small place in the chassis/suspension. Just thankful that the right guy with the right truck showed up. Dennis
My 58 broke down and I called my insurance company to have them send a flatbed, the young guy ( no experience towing old cars) said I would need to sign a paper that said if he damaged the Vette he wasn't responsible. I told him to hit the road, he asked me why Vette owners were so ****. He almost got knocked to the ground. The lady at the insurance company called me and said I wasn't being nice to the driver. She asked what should I do ? I said send someone who knows how to tow.Another company came, another young guy, this one knew how to tow.I talked to other tow drivers and they said to get a couple axle straps and keep them in the trunk. Any time you need to be towed use them.Hope this helps. BILL.
I keep 4 axle straps in all of my cars have only had the 66 towed but the driver love not having to have to worry about any damage used my straps at all 4 corners cost about $40.
