i have a 58 and am about ready to remove the engine. one simple question for someone that has done this before. Is it easier to remove the engine and trans toghether (its a manual and the radiator is already out) or jsut remove the engine. was wondering more so when it come time to put the trans and engine back toghether what way is easier??
It always seems easier to pull the motor and leave the trans in place. Problem is then ya gotta line everything up (trans and clutch) during reassy. If you have a ggod trans jack and an engine tilter you can move the trans and the engine till things align the way they should. If you don't have that stuff I would remove the engine and trans as on unit. It is more work taking all the linkage off and the drive shaft needs to be reinstalled aft the motor and trans are back in but........ You could spend forever trying to get the trans and the engine mated up without the jacks and the engine tilter.
Also if ya leave the trans in the caar and ya want to move the car you have to figure out how to hold up the trans.

Re: engine removal (dcman27)
Yep...The Oman is correct.
Helped my buddy at the restoraion shop pull a 59 motor and we left the tranny in. He used a tranny jack to keep it level when the motor came out.
You don't want to drop the front end of the tranny when the motor is not their to hold it up. A 2X4 across the front of the tranny housing to the frame on both sides will do the same thing.
But the most important thing is you need a hoist with a tilt assembly and screw jack so you can move the motor back and forth and tilt it when removing and reinstalling the motor. This helps when you align the tranny shaft to the clutch assembly and on into the piolet bearing in the fly wheel.
I'm sure are other resident expert forum members might be able to suggest another way that might be better then what I have mentioned.
That's the beauty of this forum, you can allways learn something new because of the talent that's here.
I just installed my 283 this year. I found it easier to remove and replace it with the transmission attached. I would not take the chance and try to line up the input shaft to the clutch disc with the trans in the car. You could damage the disc too easily.
You must use and engine tilter. When you lift the engine enough to remove the front mounts, also remove the 'L' shaped chassis mounts. Remove all pulleys and plug the tail of the trans.
