I had to replace the front bracket rivets on my sidepipes. I removed the rocker cover, the prod retainer and the side pipe cover. I then checked the assy manual and I think I have a discrepancy with the way the covers were installed so I am looking for some help. If I interpret the aim properly, the sequence is body, prod retainer (for rocker moulding), sidepipe cover, rocker moulding. Mine were installed body, sidepipe cover, prod retainer, rocker moulding.
A couple questions please
1 What is the correct sequence.
2 What is the correct orientation of the production retainer -- this piece has a slight channel that is about 3/4 wide. Does it go bottom of the channel out or bottom of the channel towards the body.
3 If my current sequence was wrong -- could there be a reason it was installed that way like ease of installation ??
Re: Sidepipe Re-Installation help please (JL66REDCPE)
OK, this is the way it goes bro, the production retainer is loosly attached to the body and the heat covers slide up between the body and the retainer. After adjusting/tightening you install the outer rocker molding, it has a channel on the upper edge that mates with the rocker molding. Hope this helps.

I also posted this on the NCRS board. Have not got a response yet. I went back and looked again at the AIM and it still looks like body, prod retainer, sidepipe cover, rocker moulding. However what you said abut the slots sliding under the prod retainer made sense. In fact I am not sure you could slide the rocker moulding behind the prod retainer if you dont do it the way you suggested.
Re: Sidepipe Re-Installation help please (Viet Nam Vett)
Not gonna take it apart, too much chance of scratching the paint. Just gonna take a look-see, I've had the sides off so many times last year youda thunk I would never forget.......oh, wait, I'm TRYING to forget!! Letcha know tomorrow.

Well, I looked up under the fwd part of the side pipe covers/trim strips and could only see the outer side of the covers and the upper lip of the trim strip. Could not see the retainer at all. This suggests that it's (1) body, (2) retainer and (3) heat shield. Then the cover trim strip slips into the upper retainer edge. Hope this helps.

Master Dave and others
Thank you for the research. I guess this ole man did interpet the aim correctly and mine were also installed backwards. I can undersatnd why as it looks like you need to do that to get the rocker moulding on. However I re-installed them per the aim. This is the way I installed the rocker moulding and it seemed to work fine. You slide the rocker moulding behind the retainer at the ends and the middle so that it gets started. Next start the two screws that hold the retainer on to properly align it front to back. Then just open the door and tap the rocker moulding down with a rbber mallet. Last tighten up the two screws and voila -- done. The trick was to open the door and tap the moulding down with the rubber mallet.
