Default 64 corvette Vin # match the engine date code

Hello, I hope someone can help me here. I just bought a 64 convertible vin# 40867S104272 I believe the production date is Oct. of 1963 Therefore the Engine production date should be " J" to have the correct motor Also the engine Suffix should have SD at the end of the front stamping to denote it is a AFB 4BBc Auto trans. Thanks in advance..

Your VIN indicates an early Nov 63 build. An original block casting date is typically 4-5 weeks prior to the cars build so J will work. The engine pad if you have the original engine will also have the VIN derivative stamped to the left of the engine assembly date.

The car was built in the first week of November '63, maybe the 4th.

The engine casting and assembly dates must precede this, typically by two-ish weeks but up to six months in rare examples. The car might have had a 'J' (October) cast block as you mentioned, maybe not.

The last digits of your VIN should be reflected on the pad. There should be a separate stamping with the engine assembly details. Tell us what you've got or better yet post a picture.

You should have 2 numbers on your engine pad. Using the information you provided, those numbers should be:

4104272

FxxxxSD where "xxxx" is the month and date of your engine build. If you give us those numbers we can tell you when your engine was built. Your engine was likely built in Sep or Oct 63. I have a car built on Oct 31, 1963. The engine was built in the middle of September (can't remember the exact date).
