I put just about that many miles in my Chevelle in the spring, summer and fall when the weather is nice. All with one mirror and standard lap belts and no AC

I asked if driving without the mirror is safe. I also mentioned that I can always have the 2 holes filled, sanded and painted someday, if necessary to restore the car to originality. I didn't ask for some of the nasty and snide and sarcastic comments that ensued.

Yes, it is my car and if I feel unsafe w/o a right side mirror, my car will get one. Although it is not a Top Flight car, it isn't too far off becoming one, though it is not my goal to do so as I am less interested in beauty contests for cars than I am in driving them, so in my case, safety trumps originality.
What helps is if you get s Concave ? Convex ? mirror the same size as your round mirror, you can glue it on to the corvette mirror or have it placed in the ring. It helps you see the car that you are about to cut off.

The regular mirror has to be aimed so far out to catch the blind spot, that you can not see your car at the same time.

With the mirror similar to the new car right hand mirrors, you car really see in the blind spot and the side of your corvette.

My mid-engine V8 Corvair doesn't need/doesn't have even a left side mirror but it used to! Gone now! It has seat belts but if you need AC, just roll the windows down!

To the original posters, original question. Which he already knows the answer to anyway, yes a right hand side mirror is very handy in traffic, especially in heavy traffic and really especially if you drive on roads with more than one lane going in your direction. Is it unsafe? Your call. You know your personal limitations.

I personally would find no joy in driving an old/older car in heavy, multi-lane traffic with all the idiots out there cutting lanes, tailgating, blowing the horn and cutting one another off. But I don't have to. I live in a civilized part of the country. Lots of two lane, winding, hilly roads and not much traffic.

Chances are you don't drive in winter up there in Boston so when you do drive it, it's with the top down. I can easily look over my shoulder with the top down but don't intend to drive top down in So. Florida's hot & humid summer. Hence, the question about whether one can see the right blind side with the top up or if the mirror would make it more safe.

Default The technique! Try it tomorrow during the commute to work!

Ok you want to change lanes, thus suddenly jerk the car sharply to the right but just touch the lane line only, the other guy in that lane 95% of the time will hit the brakes and then you take the spot. Don't need no mirror!

For my next post I will cover what to do to the other 5%!

ps Also don't forget to suddenly signal to the "right" just before the jerk! Everyone with a few practice runs, the technique is quickly mastered!

Default Yes, too many threads with a limited life span for us human beings!

I just can't interject my wisdom into each and every one of them regardless of my best intentions. Thus feel fortunate!
