To dig this up once more I just got a 64 coupe with hub caps and want a fun set of wheels to mess with for it. But I would like either a 6" wide knock off without the black painted spoke centers but correct centers or a 17" x 7" steel wheel to run bare black like the racers in the day did. Anyone with thoughts on where to start with either of these ideas? Done a little internet searching with no luck so far.
I've never heard of a 5 1/2 knock off wheel for a 63-67 Corvette. Every one I have seen or read about were 6" wheels. The only differences are the color between the fins, and the 66 cone is polished and the others chrome.
Okay great, thanks! So on this idea one more question John, my 64 has been converted to disc's so would not want the wheel too far out sooooo, lug nuts or knock offs?
Old thread but I am bumping rather than starting a new thread. So 63-64 wheels are unpainted and 65-66 wheels are painted. I actually think the painted back looks considerably better than the unpainted, I will probably look to eventually get some reproduction 65/66 (painted) wheels for the 64 I am buying just because I think they have a better look.
I think I have read the backspacing is the same from 63-64 to 65-66 aftermarkets (will have to confirm with Top Flight and similar), I imagine an original spec drum brake on a 63-64 requires less clearance than an original 65-66 disc (Top Flight does list theirs don't fit upgraded Wilwood Calipers without Spacer).
Anyways - just chiming in to say I think the black 65-66 looks better and I believe I see a lot of people using these on 63-64s now that I am paying more attention.
I have original Kelsey-Hayes knock offs on my "64. They are '65 that I restored to "64-unpainted. Just for your info. With drum brakes, there is not the brake pad dust to contend with.
