Default Cutting firewall C2 for long legs:I did it!

I hesitated a lot, but finally went for it. I did cut out the firewall of my C2 and glassed it 2 1/2 inch deeper. At the same time, the clutch pedal arm geometry is modified so it hangs deeper too (still need to do brake pedal). Pedal arm is now kind of Z shaped, but that is just to check if it all fits. I did provide for a passage 'tunnel' above the clutch pedal arm (red line) , so the arm can and will be replaced with a more fluid shape (green lines). The 2 pedals will now be deeper and more in line with accelerator pedal, and make things a lot easier for my long legs. I did lower the driver seat too, and replaced the steering wheel with a 15" 69 model. All together, these mods let me sit way more comfortable.

My only problem: I believe I checked it all to make sure the steering and the clutch control linkages still fit. But that may be the wrong assumption...if someone thinks I forgot something, let me know

congrats... you have gone where mere mortals fear to tread, and have done a neat job... obviously the pedals need to be redone so that your toe rides up over the pad, but you seem to have a plan for that...

Default Alternative?

Is there enough room in the mid year seats to do the same thing? You can do that with the solid axle cars, particularly pre 61.

Wow! It seems you are taking your restoration to the next level!
You've got some skills (and *****)!

I'm 1.89 metres (6.2 foot?). For me it's also a tight fit, but it's ok. A higher positioning of the steering wheel would be nice, and braking is also not that easy with the big steering wheel. Headroom is ok if I just had a haircut, otherwise I 'brush' the headliner
So how did you lower the seat, I'm interested!

A restyled brake and clutch linkage should be no problem .. after your last modification. My question is how are you going to mold carpeting for the deep recess ? Will it match the remainder of the carpet set ?
I'm 6'4" and do not take long trips in a C-2. For short excursions too busy enjoying the ride to notice any cramped quarters.
Nice work with the floor. How many layers of glass does it take to make it comparable to the remaining structure ?

I took out the sliding mechanisme. The seat frame will be welded to some much lower kit car seat sliders that will be mounted inclined (back low, front high), such that when fully back the seats are low (me driving), and when moving foreword they go up (my wife driving). Lock handle will be replaced by original C2 one...that's the plan at least

I have (test)modified the steering column tube so the steering wheel gets higher, but that requirers modding the dash escutcheon too (did not do that yet). Will publish some pictures when I feel ok with the result.

I measure 6ft4" that is 193cm. I now have plenty of head and legroom....

The brake pedal does not have as much travel as the clutch pedal.
You can lower it a couple of inches by adjusting (shortening) the clevis rod. I did this on mine with the stock floor pan.

I know the carpets will be a problem, I decided to solve that once I am there, may be a year from now at the current pace of progress

The plan is to drive at least 5000 miles a year, hopefully more. Including a long trip with my wife crossing the US (we are from Belgium). That's why I take all the effort to make it to my taste and comfort.

Currently it's 4 layers glass , 2 inside-2 outside so the original panel is sandwiched for more strength (somewhere I don't like the idea of the firewall dropping out), but I will add at least 2 more once I am 100% sure everything fits.

Default Ok I am a believer!

For now on when you say you are thinking of doing something, I will believe that you are going to do something!

Maybe next you can tackle the age old complication of "Doing it in a Vette"!

Nice work on the grasshopper legs mod....where there's a will there's a way!

Hey Bill, I've got that exact license frame on my 62, bought it at Ekler's years ago.

GKO777 - Looks like you own a 63. If you have the original seat they have height adjustment. The 1963 was the only year seats were adjustable in height or slope front to back. I had mine out to re-upholster and lowered to the max at that time.

So I'm not the only guy crazy enough to do it I cut the whole foot well/firewall out of my 65 SRIII coupe build and am extending it for more leg room. Also replaced the entire pedal box assembly to optimize the mod and to accomodate the new brake booster/MC configuration to give more room in the engine bay Should allow for a much more comfortable cockpit

Default Hey Guys!

If we keep talking about "doing it", we are going to cause the OP's thread to end up with the missing airplane on OT!

there are all kinds of 'it' you can do; you can drive it, wash it, polish it and on and on...

i'm sure that is the 'it' that all the other posters were talking about ...

Well,I assume it's the 'long legs' part in the thread title that 'did it' (...to some poster's imagination)
