Default 63 Split Window VIN?

Does the VIN on a 63 split window tell you which motor (250, 340HP, etc.) it came with? Here is a picture of the VIN....thanks for your help!

No but the trim tag to the left of the VIN does in code.

The trim tag will not tell you what engine the car came with.

You need to look at the engine stamp pad. Mine is F0523RD, RD stands for 300 HP, RC for 250 HP. Stamp pad is found on the front right side of the engine.

I suspect that the OP is missing the original engine. The simple answer is that no, without the original engine there is no way to tell what the original engine was. One possible exception is that there are some signs to strongly suggest if a fuel injection engine was there. No records of this exist at GM, or at least none have surfaced so far.

^This^

Neither the VIN nor the trim tag identify the engine.

However, if the engine is original, it will have the last several digits of the VIN on the engine stamp pad.

If the engine does not have the partial VIN on the stamp pad, it is not the original, and one is left to do some forensics in an effort to try to ascertain what the original engine was, e.g., does it have the high rpm tach and the high oil pressure gage, evidence of removed badges on the fenders, evidence of fuel lines specific to a particular engine, etc.

Good Luck!

I do like the low VIN on that car, however.

I'd say no, unless GM made a 837 big block engine back then.

STYLE 63 837
TRIM 490J

An 837, that should have given it a few extra HP

The 837 stands for 'coupe', 867 for 'convertible'...

From the trim tag it should be Silver Blue with dark Blue interior. Body assembly date G4 (March 4). VIN 11093 build date March 20.

Just remember its easy to add a lot of those parts. One common mistake some people make is they see the radiator support with the "hole" for the FI setup and assume the car was a FI car. People commonly bought this part as a dealer replacement part over the counter. It came with the hole to fit everything, but in the car they mislead some people.

On a '63, the body build date format shows the WEEK of the month, not the DAY of the month as '64-up did; G4 for this car is the 4th week of March.
