You need to look at the engine stamp pad. Mine is F0523RD, RD stands for 300 HP, RC for 250 HP. Stamp pad is found on the front right side of the engine.
I suspect that the OP is missing the original engine. The simple answer is that no, without the original engine there is no way to tell what the original engine was. One possible exception is that there are some signs to strongly suggest if a fuel injection engine was there. No records of this exist at GM, or at least none have surfaced so far.

Neither the VIN nor the trim tag identify the engine.
However, if the engine is original, it will have the last several digits of the VIN on the engine stamp pad.
If the engine does not have the partial VIN on the stamp pad, it is not the original, and one is left to do some forensics in an effort to try to ascertain what the original engine was, e.g., does it have the high rpm tach and the high oil pressure gage, evidence of removed badges on the fenders, evidence of fuel lines specific to a particular engine, etc.

Just remember its easy to add a lot of those parts. One common mistake some people make is they see the radiator support with the "hole" for the FI setup and assume the car was a FI car. People commonly bought this part as a dealer replacement part over the counter. It came with the hole to fit everything, but in the car they mislead some people.
