I believe the sides (head to intake) were painted silver at the factory. More so the bare head area. From my faint memory of Noland's book, the painting was not done with any consistency, just some dude shootin silver paint in that area, so the varying degree of overspray onto the intake could vary.

That's correct - because the aluminum intake and aluminum valve covers were covered with vacuum-formed masks in the paint booth, the machined inboard edges of the cylinder heads didn't get any orange paint (like they did with iron intakes and steel valve covers), so those machined surfaces got a "touch-up" pass with dull silver paint so they wouldn't be rusty in the showroom, and it usually oversprayed on the edges of the intake manifold and the bolts.
