My '63 has the original shifter that has had a severe rattle and just flopped around all over the place. I found that the spring at the bottom of the of the shifter was missing and went to the hardware store to get a spring. That firmed up the shifter but the reverse lockout "T" then rattled more and, sometimes, would not engage or lock reverse out. This morning I got another idea. Back to the hardware store and bought a spring to fit over the outside of the shaft between the top of the lockout handle/T and the shifter ****/black ball. All rattle below 55 mph is gone and the lockout works. I still get my buzz at about 55 but it is much less. Of course the spring shows but it will work until I rebuild/replace the shifter (which be never) but total spring cost was under $3.
I am posting this for 2 reasons. First is, of course, to help others. The second is to let everyone know that I did it so when the next owner complains about it you won't blame Billy Bob :D
If you reference the appropriate 1963 Technical Service Bulletin, the factory addressed the buzzing shifter issue 39 years ago with a simple solution. I would provide a link to that document, but rtoy will not allow such as they consider it a commercial.

Check out my technical tips. The TSB's address many unforseen problems that arose from warranty and service complaints at Chevrolet franchised dealerships. I honestly cannot even recall where I obtained my collection, but it probably was at an old swap meet.
