Default C1 Engine Code: Need Help Please

I have a 1959 C1 that I just pulled the engine out of yesterday. Here is what I found and I need some help understanding what it is. The engine block code is: 3731548. I was told by the previous owner that it was a 283ci engine, but NOT the original engine (which is totally fine b/c I'm not a numbers person; the car is getting a brand new crate SBC). I also noticed the heads have "X" stamped above/between the spark plugs. Any information would be greatly appreciated. And if you'd like to see pics, let me know I can email them directly to your private email.
Thanks, Quentin

Do a search for '57 283 3731548. There is a Dec. 2010 post with the same question; may provide answers you seek.

That's a one-year-only '57 block (no side engine mount bosses). What are the casting numbers and dates on the cylinder heads (you have to remove the valve covers to see them)? They look like the photo below.
