Default Exhaust Manifold Gaskets?

Sounds weird but my 427 didn't have any exhaust manifold gaskets on it. It didn't leak either. Are they supposed to be there?

Default Gaskets

Nope, no old Chevy SB or BB used gaskets between the manifold & the head.

That's what you call excellent machining!

Default Exhaust manifold followup queston

I just saw this old thread and I'm working on the same thing on my 66 (SB 327)...I'm replacing some old worn out Headers a previous owner had put on with the original Rams Horn Exhaust Manifolds. Do you typically put any type of high temp sealant or do you simply bolt on metal to metal?

(It appeared that when the Headers were put on some type of sealant was used in the past)

thanks

metal to metal... if it turns out later that you have any leakage then gaskets can be added..

You might want to put a straight edge across your cast iron exhaust manifolds first and if they seem to be straight and no corrosion showing, you might get by. If not, use the gaskets.
