Well my father and I picked this 66 numbers matching car apart today, Needless to say it was in sad shape. It had been hit in the front but "fixed". Who ever did it looks to have put the wrong year front clip on because of extra mounting holes for the grill. Then also hit from the rear slightly but enough to produce a 1/8 inch fracture about 8 inches long. The part that has us stumped is that it appears to be a numbers matching car but the block looks to be stamped funny... By this I mean the block numbers don't run straight and it looks as if when it was stamped that they ran out of room and placed the last two letters above and to the left of the rest of the numbers. Has anyone seen this before or has someone restamped a virgin block to appear as if it were numbers matching? I have pics of this but have no where to post them at this time. If someone can help I will send you the pics.... Dave...
Regardless of whether the numbers match or not, a parts car is a parts car. It sounds like you may be looking at one.
I looked at a matching numbers 65 convertible a year or so ago. The numbers indeed matched(327/250), and I'm sure it was original. Probably still had the factory oil in the engine from the looks of it. Also sported a one piece front end, bent frame, leaking brakes, rusted kickups, ragged top, original interior (needed replacing when Carter was President). In addition, the rear end had been hit and probably needed $2K worth of parts, not to mention labor and a complete repaint.
The guy wanted $15K for it, since it was "matching numbers", and "all original". I got back in my NOM (but otherwise immaculate) 67, and ran like hell.
I totally agree but the person who own's the car believe he has a diamond at 27,000 large ones. From us talking to him today I don't even think that he knew that it had been wrecked sometime before he purchased it eight years ago... It wasn't exactly what I was looking for but it was five minutes from my house..... Beyond what I already mentioned it need the brakes fixed BAD you could stand on them and still just slow down. Then it really needed a rebuild of the engine. I'm sure he'll find someone to buy it. However I'm just curious about the stamping. I think if it is a restamping it was done before those type of people became good at restamping blocks..
blkbelt5 was kind enough to allow me to post it at his site so if ya'd like to look check it out for the pics on this block
Interesting. I believe if you remove the paint more will be revealed.
I think it is a stamp over where the "HE' and last four vin Digits # 3154 are stamped on top of the original lightly decked numbers. See how much thicker these numbers and letters are?
The "HE" above is unique, but I have seen other motors with run off numbers like that.

The BROACH marks must be studied, so remove the paint with paint remover. DO NOT SCRATCH IT OFF.
