Drove the car initially with the Hurst shifter that came with the car, wanted a more original look? So went back to the regular GM shifter

Think I will go back to the Hurst.... seems tiny sitting in your hand and you do not get a strong feel its in the gear you have selected... Must take sometime to get used too? If you have a big hand that little tiny black ball does not give you a strong feeling lol

For future forum users please share what year car you have, so searchers will understand the meaning of "stock" shifter.

My split window (with original Muncie) has the Hurst shifter and I have no desire to swap it out. Nice precise, no BS shifts. I just replaced the nylon bushing and clips on the rods with a Hurst "Pit Pack". Now its even better !

My 63 with a borg warner and original shifter shifts real well. I like it and don't plan on changing anything.

But, but, but, you need to clarify. Is your's a SWC or is it just a common convertible? It must make a difference from what I've just read?

And we still don't know if it's a BW or a Muncie SWC?

Shifter was the same for the coupes and convertibles with borg warners and muncies. 63 Borg Warner linkages were different from the 63 Muncie linkages.

Dennis, if your Hurst has the bolt on shift lever (as opposed to some of the early Competition Plus' that came with the lever welded) you can purchase one of the "look-alike" levers and bolt it to your Hurst. They're carried by most of the vendors for about $100. It will look original, but function just as a regular Competition Plus.

Good luck... GUSTO

So, no difference between a SWC transmission/linkage and a common, lowly convertible?

But, you'll be back to the tiny ball in your hand.

The ball that goes on my '73 with the Competition Plus (similar to this one sold for the '63) feels about the same size as the "old" style Hurst ball from back in the day.

The Hurst shifter that came with my '63 when purchased in 1969, has the welded lever, so changing it out isn't an option unless I change to the later Competition Plus. Back then I installed the Hurst T-handle and I'll be stickin' with it ...until something moves me...

Good luck... GUSTO

I think I read that the '63 Muncie shifter rods actually crossed and that was changed in '64. Somebody put the repro shifter (as shown above) on my Hurst.

GUSTO, my shifter does bolt on. I guess you can buy the repro factory handle and bolt it on. Dennis

Frankie- I changed out my stock shifter on the B/W 63 trans for a Hurst with the original looking stick, and though it makes a precise, short shift as you say, I still kinda pine for the feel of the Hurst ball. It fills your hand nicely, as opposed to that small stock diameter ball. I will never go back to the stock shifter, though.

I do think that the convertibles got the shifters that were rejects from the SWC line, though

Back when I was 16 years old I would immediately put a competition plus in my cars.

Now I am an old fart, driving a "lowly" '63 convertible.
I would not consider replacing my original BW shifter with a Hurst.

The sloppy original shifter is part of the "character" of driving a 50 year old car.
Not to mention, I never miss a shift
