Default Side Pipes

How do I tell if I have sb or bb side pipes? I purchased a 63 conv. with a 454 in it. The side pipes came with it but off the car. Is there a measurement I can take to determine which ones I have? The front of the pipes that attach to the exhaust manifolds does not line up so I know I will have to modify it but I want to make sure they are right for the bb.

If they are GM pipes and don't line up with stock-type BB Corvette manifolds then they are not BB pipes. But, as far as I know, SB and BB pipes used the same chambered muffler system and turndowns. I believe only the front head pipe section is different as required for the different manifold connection details.

The BB pipe connection to the exhaust manifold is at a 45* angle in the side view, about even with the back of the engine block. The SB pipe connection to the exhaust manifold is perfectly vertical, at the center of the engine in the side view.

RayFry - I looked to see if you had pics of the side exhaust but only saw the pics of your 63 with no side exhaust showing. Are the pipes definitely GM side pipes or possibly aftermarket items?

With the angle info that John supplied I'd say they are BB. Whether or not original BB or not is the question.

Those appear to be OEM pipes modified for either SBC or BBC side exit headers:

That's exactly what they are - most of the front pipe section has been removed and stubs welded on to connect them to Hedman sidepipe headers.

So, I can install new hedman headers or have the ends cut off and modified to fit the current exhaust manifolds.

Yup, you can do either one.

I looked at the Hedman headers and they do look like they will fit these pipes correctly. Now I have to make a decision which way to go. Are the side pipes really that much louder with a 454 rather than an under car exhaust?

If your not concerned with originality another option is dual exhaust systems.
