Default Relocation

Well I decided to give up on work 2.5 years early and take full advantage of my AZ residence. My (WA) house sold here 2 days ago and I'll be moving in three weeks.

I shipped my 63 down there 4 weeks ago on Reliable after getting a bait and switch routine from United. It just didn't feel right at all. I was at peace as soon as I spoke with Reliable and then the driver (Larry).

Any Gold Canyon vette guys on this forum?

Mike - Good for you. We had plans to relocate to Prescott AZ back about 6 years ago but the economy interfered, but we finally made it this last January. We sent down 6 cars via InterCity Transport. Not a long haul from Northern California but with that many cars to send, it made for peace of mind. Once you get settled, maybe you'll have some time in late September to come up to our annual Corvette Show.
We get around 250-275 Corvettes from all over and it makes for a great weekend. http://www.prescottvettesette.org/carshow.htm

I look forward to the Prescott shows. I'm moving my vehicles a little slower. I've been driving them down on vacations and leaving them. I've got one left I'll drive for the last trip.

Welcome to AZ. There are several people from the East Valley on this forum, but can't say for sure about Gold canyon. There is a guy in Mesa/Gilbert AZ (Tom Mischke) that does wonderful work on midyears, if you need anything done.

As a side note to another subject brought up:

I would like to do the Prescott show, but it is the same weekend as the much larger and more diverse Run to the Pines show, in Pinetop, AZ.

When I sent the Prescott people a polite e-mail asking them about possibly changing the weekend of their 6 year old show (they let me know that they have been doing that show that weekend for 6 years, ya'know), they sent me a somewhat snotty e-mail telling me to have Run to the pines change their ( 30 year old) show instead.

It reminded me of why I generally like the streetrod crowd better than the Corvette crowd.

Great Doug I didn't know you were down there. I got a lot of great input from you when I rebuilt my muncie. It may have been you that hooked me up with the fella I bought my muncie kit and gears from.

In fact I have done most all of the car and it is drivable now. I did have the cluster done by Jason back when they had the bad hurricane on the east cost a couple years back, and while it looks great not much works well on it.

What I will be looking for is a good paint guy.

I'll be in the Gold Canyon area which is just east of Apache Junction on 60. I have a house there now but we'll sell it and buy a permanent place (I mean 4+ car garage, pool, view, etc.)

Why would it matter how many years a show has been in play? According to the CruisinArizona site there are shows just about every weekend from August into October and some weekends, there are more than one show listed. Moving a show just one weekend will surely put it on top of yet another show so there is no way at that time of year to avoid a potential conflict. And when one show is more street rod related compared to a strictly Corvette Show, is there really a conflict? Lots of Vette owners have street rods/street machines in their garages, it'll wind up being their choice, head to the Corvette Show or go to a Street Rod Show. Then next year, check out the other show.

Hi Doug,
I am in Redlands area of California and many people ask me about Corvette people that fix these old cars. Is Tom Mischke one of them? Does he have a shop, or just work out of his home? What kind of work does he do?

One of the best shops in the area is Vintage Iron and Restoration in Scottsdale - Mark Scalpon and his crew are top notch and work on all older cars - his staff knows vintage Corvettes very well and the work they did on my 67 was top notch! Here is his website for anyone looking for a good shop that is honest!

He used to Have CPR Corvette restorations in Mesa at a commercial address, but he split with his partner and built a shop on his acre +/- place in Gilbert.

He knows all the right chrome and polishing and upholstery people, and does meticulous work, without taking forever, or getting too expensive by letting hours "accumulate" on the project, while it sits there.

He restored a couple Corvette that were damaged when the tent blew down at BJ a few years ago. This one midyear convertible, looked like it had been rolled at speed, windshield pushed flat, (that canvas is heavy and abrasive) and scratch all the chrome and stainless and sanded the paint off the fender top, and a few months later, it looked brand new.

He does resto work, mostly body panel replacement and mechanical assembly, i don't think he does much general mechanical work, but you can ask. He farms out the paint, and interior to two other shops in Mesa.

It amazes me when people start a new yearly car show, and don't first check to see what the schedules of the other major cars shows in the state are.

Other than the two Goodguys shows, there is a show in Yuma in March, two Cruise on Centrals in Phoenix, a couple weeks before Goodguys, Payson last weekend in April, Run to the Pines, in late September, a Tuscon area show sometime, and Flagstaff in early September.

The rest are generally all small local shows, that may, or may not happen, and vary by date each year.

Of course, if 95% of the cars that are going to show up, haven't been paid off yet from being financed by GMAC, there is probably not much conflict with shows that limit their attendance to 1980 or earlier, or 1973 or earlier cars.

Run to the Pines is a 3 days show, with 550 cars in attendance from 1903, up to 1973, on the grass at the Pinetop country club, the last weekend in September. Prescott is not losing many attendees, there are maybe 20 Corvettes '72 and earlier that show up, but it would be nice if event organizers (no matter what event) didn't just pick a time at random without checking for established show conflicts first.

Doug

Time to get back to the OP's opening statement. Splitray, sounds like you're glad you sped up your retirement date. Lot's to do in Arizona.
