Picture of Original Battery
My wife and I are toying with the idea of trying for a Top Flight on our 1966 SBS L-79 Convertible. The biggest hurdle we are facing is the battery. We currently have an old Interstate. The car in now about 95% original. We **** the original owners.
We would like to replace it with a restoration battery the looks exactly like the original from the factory. Can anyone send us a picture the original Delco battery, especially the top. Any help on this would be mostly appreciated.

Restoration Battery makes the closest to original battery out there, but expect a standard 7 point deduction (at least at a Regional NCRS meet) for the lip. Noone makes a battery that has the correct lip. Don't forget the 10 Bonus points, it helps makes up for the 7 point hit on the battery and 3 point hit on tires (presupposing you don't have non-DOT tires). Good luck! ARA

George and Sue Ann-
you can pay $350 for a new restoration battery with life expectancy of maybe two years and take a 7 point originality deduct.
Or,
you can pay around $95 for a modern AC Delco 24A battery that fits perfectly in the space and holder and should last 5- 7 years or longer
and take a 10 point originality deduct.
Out of 4510 total points.
Can you guess which one I run in my 65?

10 points out of 4510. That is not really much of a point deduction, now is it?

Boyan-
that's all well and good,
If you want it to look as close to original as possible, that is what is important to you, and the cost is secondary. The fact your battery gets you 3 more points than my battery, or ten more points if you lay tar on the top (maybe) is not an important issue to you.
The OP says his concern is making top flight. I did it at National with my new battery. He can too. And probably make over 97% with my battery. So, he need not put a battery in that closely resembles original, unless that is important to him.
ps, your car is gorgeous, and I applaud all you have done to make it as close to original as possible. Let me know if you need any more of my help to make it even better.
pps- I think your 10 years is a bit of exaggeration. I remember when you bought it three years ago...
