I have an early 63 300hp. Painted valve covers. My question is, I have been told that early 63's had the screws not bolts for the v/c.
Thanks. Ant...
What you've been told is correct in regards to the screws. However, last I knew, the NCRS '63 - '64 judging manual does not recognize the screws on the early cars.... in case that matters to you.

See that's what I like to know why it is not noted or recognize....
It's exactly as shown in post #7 with the screws and retainers under the screws. Also, note the early style valve covers in the area around the 327 label.
I thing the 300hp decal is missing that goes under the 327 badge.
Birdman, from the pictures you have a very nice looking car...

Someone in NCRS has a car without the screws, so they are not recognized.
I will quote directly from the current Judging Guide:
Base Engine and L75
Each cover is secured with four hex-head bolts
L76 and L84
In 1963 models, each valve cover is secured with four cadmium or zinc plated Phillips head screws.
On late 1963 and 1964 models, each cover is secured with four cadmium or zinc plated recessed hex-head bolts.

.
What's hard to fathom is that it's been common knowledge for decades that the early '63s with stamped steel valve covers used screws yet the Judging Guide still fails to recognize this true fact.
I remember in my early days judging a 63 Corvette at a NCRS show in Toronto. I mentioned that the owner's car had the incorrect item, (forget what it was). The owner got a little annoyed and told me that the item was not in the NCRS manual. I told him that the item should be corrected. Don't know if the owner followed my suggestion.
