Default 1966 Interior Mirror?

Is there an easy way to fix an interior mirror that droops when I step on the accelerator hard? The last one I tried to fix cracked on me. It seems that the ball in the rear of the mirror is the culprit. Any thoughts???

Please don't answer with (don't step on the accelerator).

If only you will be driving the car, put a dab of Loctite on the ball and position the mirror to your driving position.

Is this little stamped/formed bushing in place in the hole in the mirror support where the pivot screw goes?

Mine was the same in my '66...I cut a small piece of 3M double-sided tape and then tilted the mirror full up...Then jam the 3M tape into the ball socket while moving the mirror back down into it's proper spot - the tape will add friction to the ball/socket...I did this to mine and it's worked well...

John,

I'll pull it and see. If not, I doubt that anyone sells them. What do I do then?

My 66 does the same thing. The pivot is tight, but the ball is somewhat loose. I adjust up-down for the mirror at the pivot, with the ball at its adjustment extreme. So it can only droop if the pivot is loose. The ball is against a hard stop. Make sense?

Sorry Harry but it doesn't make sense to me. But then again I am an old guy who doesn't comprehend real well.

Loosen the pivot screw (about an inch up the arm from the ball joint) just enough so you can articulate the arm upward...about to a 90 degree bend if I remember correctly...then tighten the screw and readjust your mirror to where you need it. After you do this, the mirror will be near the bottom of adjustment in the ball socket and can't slip down any further and mess your mirror adjustment up...I've done this one before too...hope this explanation doesn't sound even more confusing ;-)

I'm an old guy, too. So things don't come out as clearly as they did 20 years ago!

Anyway, Sonny is doing the same thing.. I'll try to explain it a little better.

When it falls, the fall is stopped when the ball runs out of travel. Leave the ball in this position and remake the height adjustment at the pivot (vs the ball). The mirror, then, cannot drop any further (the ball is out of travel) and should hold adjustment.

I hope this or Sonny's explanation are a little clearer.

Harry

Haven't tried it yet. May have to wait for spring. I put the car away and it is under the covers now. Doubt that I'll take it out for a joy ride anytime soon. Winter is coming you know. Brrrrrrr.............
