Default C1 front headlight assembly

Guys,
I've pulled apart the front end and removed the headlights. It appears that sometime over the last 50+ years the buckets got swapped around and the bulbs are mixed up. I have the RT bucket with the large hole in the center between both headlight at the top and the LT side it's located at the bottom. In both cases the bulbs were upside down. Also are the high beams on the inside or outside. Strangely, I've looked at both my service manual and restoration books and neither mention anything about this.

Thanks!

There is definitely supposed to be a left bucket and a right one. Each has a small pin, at different locations, that go through a hole in the fiberglass. The cups that hold the headlights into the buckets are each different. The bulbs all should be right side up.

Are the high beams on the inside or out?

Low outside, high inside. This is not just for Corvettes, this configuration is basically automotive standard for all cars, Ford, GM, Mopar.

Now, if it is an over/under headlight system, the low beam is on top.

Car is at the body shop and I'm detailing the buckets so I can't go and look. I don't see any pins on the back of the buckets but there is a "hump" located on the back of each socket. Is this what you're talking about?

In your picture, the cluster on the left, the right-hand bulb, at about 11 o'clock is the pin that I am referring to. It could have been cut off on the back if they wanted to mis-apply it.

In your photo, yes, the bucket on the right is certainly upside down, if your "LF ^" mark is showing it's position when you took it off the car.

In the pic of that one, the lower center large hole is supposed to be on top. I think those were replacement buckets you have there. The large hole was used on passenger cars as a ground point. A black wire had a riveted lug attached to those large holes on replacements. Not needed for Corvette as the harness supplies the ground directly to the bulb terminals via the wiring sockets.

You may have 2 of the same side, R or L not sure. And you're missing several clips for the bezel screws to attach to.

Here is a pic of a NOS Guide replacement I had some time ago. You can see the large hole up top.

Here's a set of instructions for the replacements which may help.

Awesome Rich!I do believe you are correct and I have 2 rt's as this would explain why the pins were removed and bulbs appeared to be upside down when I placed them on the counter. Thanks!
