I would not think there is a legal issue on your ownership of the 78 frame. Anyone ever looking at the modified frame will recognize it as such and IIRC you will be using the rear kick-up section from your 65 frame, which would contain the VIN stamp from your original frame. You will have to extend the front horns also and relocate the firewall frame mounts as they are too far forward for your C-2.

Repaired frames are sold by more than one vendor in this business. They contain original assigned VIN's that do not relate to the cars they end up under.

VIN assignment, legally, is done by the manufacturer. The VIN tag on you car is affixed to the birdcage. If you were using an after market chassis that chassis would have a number assigned by its manufacturer. If you were using a new replacement frame it would come without VIN assignment. Doesn't mean you couldn't stamp your VIN into it.

As you will be using your original kick-up portion of the frame I don't think you have any issue.

Place your self in the shoes of a prospective buyer of your $40,000 car
and you see that the VIN is missing. Would you buy it?

Better still, place yourself in court defending yourseld as being part of a stolen car ring.

Then there is the posibilty that your car is stolen from you and the police suspect that you placed your VIN on a previously stolen car.

The VIN is not missing. It is attached to the birdcage under the glovebox door. In Tom's case it, if it still exists on his frame, will be on the kick up area as well following frame modification on the 78 frame.

If you are dealing with a date d!ck car in the six figure range your point would be valid. You are dealing with a modified car on a modified replacement frame.

Your stolen car ring theory applies to any and every car with a replacement frame bearing a VIN different than the one under the glovebox, which is the one that counts in this series of automobile as it is the VIN on the Title and Registration DMV documents.

You might want to check the law on this issue.

Not saying it isn't done, not saying it is "wrong", just saying it is, in many states, illegal.

I went back and checked the Code Of Alabama (where I live) to refresh I memory. Removing the VIN stamp on a frame = illegal. Stamping a different VIN on a frame = illegal.

As I stated earlier, the statues look on the VIN stamps on vehicles, engines, transmissions, frames, etc. as "theft control devices". Removing, altering, etc. these theft control devices is illegal.

Yes it would. You might give Jeff a call and he could advise you on it. If you need his number give me a call and I can give it to you.
