I have a few engines at my shop from 20 years collecting. The other day I decided to spend some time decoding the engines and components. My mission was to find out what I have.
One block in particular I do hope someone can help me with....or at least direct me accordingly.
This is what I know of this engine block:
Casting # 3858180 (327 cu.in.)
Dated B 12 6 (February 12 1966)
Casted "T" on rear flange (Tonawanda)
Stamped Sequence # 216632279 ( I am having difficulty deciphering)
From my research, I believe this to be one of the Tonawanda blocks used in 66 when there was a shortage (or ran out) of Flint blocks. I have read that this block (3858180) was used on Passenger, Chevelle, and Corvettes in 1965 and 1966. What separates my block from the Passenger and Chevelle is the lack of Engine Code stamped into the front passenger side pad. I do have the sequential number (216632279) only, which I read is correct for 1965-1967 corvettes.
If someone could please help me with confirming this information, and hopefully decipher the sequence number, I would appreciate this.
From what I have read, the engine's use in Vettes is undocumented. Probably passenger car and or truck use. The sequence number doesn't look anything like a Vette serial number found on an engine pad. Others may add to this. Dennis
The number stamped on the pad of a 65 or 66 Corvette would be similar to:
5106778 or 6106778
with the first number being the year, second number ( always a 1) a place holder, and then the next 5 numbers the sequential number matching the last 5 of the vin.
Stamped Sequence # 216632279 ( I am having difficulty deciphering)
That has to be a rebuilders' code - it doesn't fit any factory stamping format, either from the engine plant or an assembly plant; if there's no engine plant date/suffix stamp on the front pad besides that number, that guarantees that it's an aftermarket rebulder's code.
Thanks for your input. I guess I can just assume it fits within this group of fitments with no guarantee of specific fit!
I can only speak to Corvette usage, and it was extremely limited, confined to a few 8180 blocks trans-shipped from Tonawanda to Flint V-8 to confirm complete machining compatibility between the Tonawanda and Flint castings. There was never a "problem" of any kind at the Saginaw Foundry.
