I'm getting ready to paint my car and I'm going to take the doors off to remove the paint from the door jams and all around the door. What is the best way to line the doors back up when I reinstall them ?

Dennis - You could try to 'match-mark' around the hinge arms to the inner door surface and of course, keep all the shims taped together but I think you're still going to have to 'tweak' them when it's time to put them back on. Also, are you thinking about pulling the hinges out and replacing the hinge pins and bushings? If so, that could also make a new alignment necessary. The doors are fairly light so it's not that big a deal.

Before you loosen the hinge bolts inside the door, drill 2 holes through each hinge flange, through the shims and through the door mounting plate.

Choose a drill size that matches with a known size of drill rod you have or obtain from a hardware store near you. 3/16 is a good size but I would not go above 1/4.

When it is time to reinstall the door all you need to do is put the shim pack back in place between the door and the hinge flange and align every thing to install your drill rod pins into the holes previously drilled. When the bolts are tight, remove your pins and your door will be back where you started from.

That will get you CLOSE but not perfect; also if there are any shims in the hinges you'll have to record where they were and put them back EXACTLY were they were originally installed.

If you rebuild the hinges while the doors are off (prob a good idea) then that will change things as well

I'd thought about doing that, but the backing plates inside the door move, they're not fixed to the door when the bolts are tightened they sandwhich the door between then, but I thank you for the information. Thanks Dennis
