Another new member with a new member type question. After using my '67 exclusively for transportation purposes for the last 35 years I am giving it some well deserved (and needed) TLC. In so doing I have become aware that the vin #'s of '67's all had an "S" for St. Louis in the number. Mine has an "A" where the "S" is supposed to be. How come?
Re: Another numbers question.............. (gatorgork)
All VIN's (on the stainless steel VIN plate) have an "S" in the middle for the St. Louis plant. The "Body Number" on the adjacent aluminum "trim tag" (which has no direct relationship to the car's VIN) is preceded by either an "A" for A.O. Smith body build location or an "S" for St. Louis body build location. If the car's VIN (on the narrow stainless steel plate attached with "rosette" pop-rivets) has an "A" in it instead of an "S" and you know it to be original to the car, it's a very rare assembly plant error; if you don't know for sure it's original to the car, it may have been altered.
Re: Another numbers question.............. (JohnZ)
No it's on the plate and in the middle where the "S" should be. Interestingly the number on my bill of sale has an "S". This created a real problem one time when I was trying to register my car at Pearl Harbor. The title and registration both have the "A."
Re: Another numbers question.............. (JohnZ)
Someone said that there was a strike during the '67 run and that bodies made during that time, a very few, were designated with an "A." Doesn't sound quite right to me. Think I agree with you, it's an error. However, I can't believe they were punching out the vin plates by hand!
Re: Another numbers question.............. (gatorgork)
as for an A in the serial number, A was for the Atlanta plant, and in 67 they made chevelles, lemans, ect (funny as they were a-bodies that year.) does your car have a corvette prefix on the ser number?? As stated by other members, A on the data plate denoted an AO Smith body, but A in the vin denotes the Atlanta plant.
Re: Another numbers question.............. (jerrybramlett)
No responses from gatorgork makes me believe his car does not have a corvette vin and we may have ruined his day. unfortunatly it appears he purchased this car years ago, and may now find out he may be a victim....I cant even imagine..............
