Thats the question.......
I would say a "stock shifter" in good cond.
Many have never felt one.

396rat got that one right, I rebuilt my original as tight as I could get it and it still was sloppy. I've never seen an aftermarket with the reverse lock out.
I finally put in the Hurst competition plus and it is great, looks the same from the top side but shifts a thousand times better. Still has the tee handle to fool with while you are driving but it is non functional, the spring for reverse is really tight and you will never mistake it for first.
Milehigh66 said it all. My experience to a "T". Installed a Hurst Comp Plus and got the look alike handle. Believe me, you won't miss the stock shifter!Every shift is crisp and precise. No vibration rattles at highway speeds. This was the part GM neglected to follow through on.
Yep... As the others have already stated....Hurst Comp Plus. I rebuilt my original 3 or 4 times in different configurations, then finally tossed the towel and sprung for the Hurst with the look-alike shifter. It was like a different transmission. The original went to the box marked...."Never again while I own it...give to next caretaker"........ :yesnod:
Good luck.

I have owned several cars and have installed Hurst shifters in them.
Mainly with top loaders, I think the Vette mid year shifter is one of the best
factory shifters of the 60's. Set up right, its like a toggle switch.
Very close and precise.
As I mentioned, few folks have tried one that has not been worn out.
IMHO, there not all that bad. And like mine enough not to change it.
Best shifter = Hurst Comp +
I replaced my factory unit with the hurst "look alike" from Corvette Central... night and day!
If you want positive shifting with precise feel and crisp action, Hurst is it! (although, I do have my original in a box on a shelf)
Replaced the stock shifter in my 70 Vette (after the stock handle broke off!) with the Hurst Comp +. I should of done it a lot sooner, especially since I was working with Hurst at the time!
A good feature of the Hurst, is that it has stop bolts so you can bang shifts as hard as you want with no internal trans damage, as well as it's great tight shifter. Plus I still dream about Linda Vaughn [for all us old guys, you young guys, never mind].
