I tried pulling out the defrost **** yesterday and I could only get it out about 1/4 of an inch using my bare hand. I wrapped the **** in tape and used a pair of pliers to get out all the way out. I have tried spraying some gun oil on the cable but it didn't help. I have some Creep which I'll try next. I have had the car 4 years and I have never pulled the Defrost **** out. Any ideas on how to free this cable up? If I ever get it freed up I'll try to remember to pull it out a few times on each use.
Take the glove box out and look at the mechanism for the heater/defrost on top of the box. Remove the cable at the arm, then see if the mechanism moves freely and does the cable move better or not. See if anything is binding. If not it may be the internal door/diverter stuck/binding/broken. This could led to a heater assembly removal project, which can and should cause you to replace the heater core while in there. I hope you don't have A/C. Dennis

Dennis, I played with it this morning and the cable has not loosened up one bit. I suspect it is a defrost mechanism problem. I have the Old Air A/C and I just got my new compressor installed yesterday. The old one was leaking freon out the front seal. I also have a A/C vent hose leak on the driver's side so I'll be taking the side panels off to get to that leaky hose. I am not going to loose any sleep over this defrost issue as I have never used it since I have owned the car. BTW, the cable is working the defrost mechanism, with the blower on high and the Defrost **** pulled out, it blows a huge volume of air. I am trying to get all the creature comforts working perfect for the trip to Carlisle.

After this last post, I continued to pull the cable out and sprayed it with Creep. This past Monday I drove the car to VIR. I left at 5:30 so when I hit the first stop light I was getting some moisture on the windshield. I tried pulling out the Defrost **** and to my surprise, it pulled out with little effort. I really thought spraying the cable was a waste of time but it worked.
VIR is just over 200 miles from VB. The weather was great and we had a great time watching the HPDE put on by the NCM. I took a few parade laps at lunch which was great. Here are a few pictures.
For anyone else who may have a cable problem:
On my Harley I use DRI-SLIDE. It's an alcohol based graphite solution. Comes with a needle to affix to the bottle. The alcohol flows the graphite into the cable, then evaporates leaving the graphite behind to lube the cable. Oils will collect dirt and eventually gum up the cable more.
I'm with Mikey... (us Harley guys stick together). Dri-Slide or Bike-Aid works well on Harley cables. The best application is to remove the cable , hang it from one end and let the Dri-Slide run down its length from one end to the other. As Mikey said it just leaves behind the graphite which wont gum up.
