Secondly, some additional info is needed to diagnose your problem. Does the new alternator have an internal voltage regulator, or did you keep the original external one - a small black box mounted on the fender?
If its a new style internal regulator, there's not much you can do, other than return/exchange it if it's a recent purchase. If it's older you may need to just get another one. Some alternators with internal regulators have a removable/replaceable circuit board, but I'm not sure if you want to go to that level.
If you have the old style external regulator, sometimes the internal switch sticks. A sharp rap on the metal case or adjacent fender might free it up. Otherwise those are easy and cheap to replace, and there is even a solid state upgrade available.
Good luck!
