I have the block out of my car and I'm preparing to repaint it while it is out. My question is, what it the very best paint that I should use to do the paint work? I've read that paint containing urethane is the best. Is urethane available in a spray can? I want the paint to last so I'm pretty much willing to do whatever it takes to optimize the final product. What path should I take?
My thought would to make sure you prep any item to be painted as the most important part of painting. Clean, clean, clean. That is more important than the brand of paint.
I like VHT engine paint.

I always use por15 engine paint
Make sure to reduce it and spray rather than brush on as manufacturer says. Much better results and it's bullet proof
Good luck
On an engine! A little heat resistant material and a printer!
I have painted a lot of engines and Most rattle can engine paints work well. After cleaning the engine of all grease, I wash with dish washing soap. Has worked excellent for me for years. Seams to get that last amount of grease film. Crazy but it works. I also use on body painting.
Rattle cans are for home handy projects.
If they were any good, professional painters would use them to paint cars.
The faults are, They are to thin to fill in any imperfections. They are only single stage paints and they are formulated to be used in enclosed spaces that does not have ventilation, so they are missing all the "good stuff" that makes good paint good!
The biggest thing is to get it clean, after your best cleaning job, sprayed on solvent will rinse off the final oils. Then an abrasive "wire" wheel will arbitrate and shiny surfaces.
A good primer is a must, then spray with a good quality automotive paint, either urethane or epoxy. Apply the recommended film thickness per the manufacturer.
Remember you can have it either good, cheap or quick. But not all three!
Just a note: You can get 2 part urethane paint in rattle cans.
The cans have 2 chambers, the activator is released when you break the seal on the bottom of the can. You then have about 24 hours to use the paint before it sets up.
