Default Engine Casting Number

I'm trying to document the mess my engine is. There is no serial number on the pad, which I understand may be typical of a Chevy replacement engine. I was told it was an over the counter purchase of the same year, but I don't necessarily believe that anymore than the other lies they told me. I do have the engine casting number, though. I can't find that number in my Dobbins fact book. The casting number is:

3959512

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks Frankie. Why doesn't that surprise me?

Well - it happens. There isn't a thing wrong with a 512 block; its just not the one that car was born with !

It's still a cool car. I bought it as a driver.

It's a replacement 4 inch bore block from 68 or later for 62 up application.
Check the casting date.
The 3959512 casting did not exist until 68. there has been much discussion on the subject.

Here is some of the discussion on it:
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...post1580088675

The whole thread should be read I guess so the OP can form his own conclusion - I don't see the need
to rehash it here since it prob doesn't matter to the OP - its not the original engine for the car.

Thanks Frankie, interesting reading. Not real sure what I came away with, but interesting. I knew the engine has been replaced.

The story about the CE engines does seem to track with what I was told when I bought the car. The replacement engine has been modified from the original engine configuration, but without tearing it down I won't know what was done. It has a Weiand intake manifold with a Holly 2818 carb, which I assume stands taller than the original requiring the '67 BB hood. I do know it has hydraulic lifters. I've already found inconsistencies with the choke plumbing and the vacuum advance is missing from the distributor.

My sentiments exactly.

The 512 is a very serviceable piece, I would leave it in and use it unless you find some defect with it....

Thanks Frankie, and everyone else who contributed!

Repowering the Corvette is not an option, at this time anyway. I would have to contend with the admiral over repowering the boat first!
