Just a side note; dont put any thread sealer or Teflon tape on the sending unit. It gets it ground through the threads.
Doesn't matter - that's another "internet legend" - the sharp pipe thread form will cut through any sealant with no effort at all, and even if it doesn't and resistance is increased as a result, that would make the gauge read lower, not higher. Success! A new 180* t-stat did the trick. 97* here today and the car never got above 185* measured with an IR gun. I also learned that my dashboard temp gauge indicates 180* at the first mark - A good thing to know. Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and help.
Kurtibm, thank you for the lower radiator seal. I'll be putting it to good use.
