Default CE block

I have been told by several corvette guys that blocks where not marked CE counter exchange until late 60's. So what did they do in 1964-65. Thanks, jim

Service replacement short blocks weren't stamped.

CE (Chevrolet engine) blocks were intended for warranty purposes, not general service replacement even though many were eventually sold as service replacements when the program expired.

Default ce block

Thank you, The car I'm looking at has an engine with only a code on the pad FO6IIHG ,870 block. It is 1964 vette that was a 365 hp with a 1965 engine, which he claims was a factory replacement. sound true or BS. jim

HG was the code for a '65 FI engine. I think the complete service engine assemblies were stamped with a build code. Can't remember.

ONe of these numbers guys can tell you what the rest of the stamped number means.

Could be the real thing or a restamp.

When the CE warranty program was over, the leftover CE engines were sold to Chevy dealers at a heavy discount to move them off the books and the dealers sold them to first come, first served. There were some really good deals going on then. Wish I'd have bought a half dozen of those engines at the prices they were going for.

Default Anyone have a history of the warranties offered?

length of warranty! probably would not be too complex to get, because it was probably in the advertising if I was to look!

I could see like 36 months or 30K miles. So if you had a particular model, I could see the dealership looking for older stock first and if none, then grabbing the closest in HP available engine. So I could see non CE enginees going in under warranty, and then I could see just about anything stamped CE also going in and that could be something of a completely different level of build.

not a good example but in our Ford station wagon, we lost the 429 two years after it was bought, so the warranty replacement was a 460!

The CE engines covered the 5/50,000 warranty from '67-'72(?).

There was lot's of fraud and abuse of that program from where I sat.

Default Hey Define abuse

I think I have your thoughts of fraud figured out, which would be guys wanting new engines?

Because the point that should be made is that the individual dealerships upon receiving a car that came in made a lot of decisions as to what to offer or to tell the guy with the flares, headers, and roller rockers, etc. (to take a hike). But it was common to finagle an upgrade engine naturally and fairly (no fraud or abuse) if the customer wanted to pay the price of what the dealership wanted to charge over and above the dealership warranty work. Therefore some 327's I am sure got lunched, and some 427's went in!

""Finagle"" where the heck did I pull that word from!

Default Also or PS which ever you guys prefer!

I could see guys trying to get the new 350 or 454's, but I bet the dealerships would have been pushing to move out any 327's or 427's sitting around out back collecting dust.

Also I have heard of the Dealerships, on an engine they didn't want to keep, that was taking up space, hand stamping CE so the customer assumed that they were getting the proper warranty replacement as per the warranty and probably threw in the latest shiny chrome valve covers for free.

You need to do some serious homework and find out how the CE warranty program (or any other GM warranty program) was run.

What you're talking about is not what I was talking about abuse of the program at all.

I wanted you to do my homework for me, because I actually aint familiar with the CE evils or specific abuse that you are referencing or what that is all about! I have just heard about the things I wrote happening at dealerships! No seriously!!!!! Guys usually did drive the car back to a dealership and chatted with the service Manager and I am sure if it was all done proper, paperwork got done, but I know a lot of them just said screw the red tape, and took care of the customer or did it to the customers wishes!

Default Ce, l-88

I bought my 68 as a 435 car and had the engine replaced with a 430 short block under warrantee but I paid the difference to do that....The Vette was covered under the 5 year 50,000 mile warranty....the engine was not heavily used and after the 5th year {1973} I parked it with 28,000 miles.....I could be wrong but I believe that the warrantee was applicable only until 1973....and then GM went to another deal with lower terms.....smog engine era, no more rich engines

Somebody on the forum made the statement that CE ment 'Chevrolet engine' .....I don't recall who however

And darn if we didn't get a super cool story from Ironcross of doing the very thing I just wrote about, finagling a better and cooler replacement!!! Darn that finagling in this instance worked out!! An L88 short block, really really cool! But question, did it end up as the front or the back engine in my favorite boat???
