charging problem
On my 61 I had the generator fail and get very hot. It also took out my new regulator. I think the problem occurred when the original regulator had one set of points the batt side I think loosen up and had about a 1/2" gap. I reset the points and reinstalled that regulator, seemed fine charging a little to a lot. Today after sitting a few days battery was stone dead. Any chance this gen/regulator problem killed the battery also?

It sounds like the reg point stuck closed and allowed current to the fields. Genny fields are probably toast. Good chance it was the reason for the dead battery. Battery may be revived with a slow charge if reg is disconnected.

I would remove the 'Batt' lead from the generator and then charge the battery.
Once charged, using a test light, see if there is any voltage at the battery wire you removed from the generator.
If so the regulator is N/G.
