Default Toilet Paper and a Big Hammer

In case there are still lingering doubts about using wet TP and a hammer to remove a pilot bearing from a crankshaft, I submit exhibit A

I used grease and a socket the last time and it popped it right out - but there was quite a bit of grease to clean up. Next time I'll try this.

You'll have to show those boys how to use the freezer and the oven make steel do magic tricks.

I use the grease and an input shaft, but next time I'll try the tp....unused.

I did this last time with the ball bearing on my LS engine with perfect results. Way too easy - for a change.

Same as packing the bore with heavy grease, but with two main differences:

1 - whatever you use to drive the wet TP in (vs drive the heavy grease in) does not have to be as close of a fit.

2 - the clean up is way easier - water only.

Okay, there is a third difference - any spatter that shoots out when you go to pound on the whatever you're using to drive it out is far less messy, assuming you're using fresh clean TP.

Was familiar with the grease method, but had never heard of the wet TP method. Makes sense. Thanks.

And what else would you use for Pete's sake ? Repurposed TP ? Yuck ?

Anyway all this talk of grease, shafts, toilet paper and pounding on things make me thing I'm on the wrong site

The one the wife says I'm not allowed to visit anymore

Thank you, Donny Brass. I tried the grease method on this bushing with no luck. Tried your toilet paper trick and now I am a believer.

I used bread, works great, and even less mess than with the paper because no need to add water. As the 'driver' I took a bolt and taped it until it was a fit into the bearing.

I guess nobody will answer my question on exactly how this is done so I'll pose my opinion:

1) Pack the bearing area with TP, bread, whatever, moistened is best
2) Find a punch, bolt, other driver the width of the bearing opening
3) Pound the driver until the packing material drives the bearing out

Is that it ?

Sorry Frank, Ithought it had been answered. I guess I was envisioning the two types of TP.....butt not for long, lol.

...yes, the method you described is how it's done.
