Ran across an ad stating a 1955 Chevrolet Corvette engine for sale. The head casting number is 3703523 which does check out to be correct . Block casting which was not posted, is also supposed to be a 1955 265 identification number. Its a complete engine so it should have a 7008005 Rochester four barrel. For two hundred asking price it may be worth the gamble to drive and check. Owner has had it stored for many years. If the heads belong to the block there would be little doubt. Early blocks with no VIN stamped on the pad would indicate this could be used as correct for a Corvette. Any other means of ID ?
He is pretty sure he also has the generator which should be tach drive .. I think.
If it looks just like this it might be worth $200.00 buy it see if the breather pipe at the engine back area goes through the block ( if so it's a 1955 block) but that don't mean it's Corvette ,check the pad G or GR
Thanks Copper;
I was thinking the correct carburetor and generator would be worth that amount. I completed a search and those early generators with the tack drive are high buck items. The heads are definitely Corvette by number, another hard to find part. Someone out there needs this for their 55 if it pans out. I have spent money on more foolish things.
It's more fun tracking leads on cars / parts than the purchase. Not to mention the minor details that make them authentic. I am not a numbers person. Just like chasing history experts seem to gather after years of investigation on chronological changes and improvements.
Here's what Roy means about the crankcase vent tube going through the block at the rear, forward of the flywheel; this was a one-year-only 1955 design feature.
The block is a 3703524.. The site I looked up for the heads said it was listed under Corvette application. May also have been used in the passenger power pack option. This is why detective work is important.
Based just on what you know so far, if what's there isn't completely trashed it doesn't sound like you can get hurt for $200. Chances are that over the years most of us have spent more and got less. Keep us posted on how you make out and what you actually end up with.
date code and engine pad determine the value of the block. if the engine date code is too early or the engine pad shows it is a Tonawanda block the block is of no value to a corvette owner. the other parts such as the intake manifold, 523 heads, 55 only oil pan, exhaust manifolds, etc, will bring a lot more than $200 on ebay.
The block leaked water into the oil pan. The reason it was replaced and set aside. No idea if this would be repairable but the components, generator, exhaust manifolds, oil pan, intake, carb, water pump, fan, heads would certainly have a value beyond the asking price. I haven't seen a complete generator with tack drive capability in rebuildable condition for less than three hundred fifty dollars. Course when you buy one, four more turn up at half price.
If gen is a 1102115 it is not correct for Corvette......that is 58-59 passenger and truck PS .....will work but common incorrect replacement on Corvettes

If the generator has a tach drive end plate that one can attach a cable with the cap to secure it in place and drive a tachometer .... how can it be the wrong one ? I realize passenger cars had the power steering pump attached to some generators but the face plate would be different and may be a different series / part number. There are also two size pulleys. My fuelie has the large pulley, this one should be a smaller diameter.

If 55 the generator don't use rubber bushings ,car and Corvette are different ,many Corvettes use car generator not knowing the difference ,then wonder why the belts don't line up and the tag is in the wrong location and on and on!.

If the block had water in the pan it could have been a frozen block in a cold climate left in the cold with water inside but no antifreeze. If so the block could be full of spiderweb cracks that will never become sealed/repaired. U can read some rare blocks for sale with cracks advertizing needed repair. I would avoid cold climate blocks.
