I need a 283 for my 58 project. I cannot afford to go "numbers correct" but would like to be "period correct". Are there any major differences, except for heads and intakes, in 283's from 57 to 65? I found a good deal on a 64 283. Would it look like a 58 except for numbers?

The Flint (Corvette) block has a 1/8" pipe plug just above and behind the water pump. the Tonawanda block does not. There's also a minor configuration difference in the adjacent rib beside the plug. Cosmetically, from the top of the engine, that's the main difference I think. The '64 should be a good choice.
To what he wrote, I'd add that blocks made for model year '59 and later use a neoprene rear main seal while earlier blocks were designed to use a graphite impregnated rope seal. While it's possible to retrofit a neoprene seal to the earlier blocks (there are kits), I think it's better to just start with a block already designed for the later seal, like the '64 block you've found.
