Default US made sand blaster

Does anyone have a line on a good portable US made sand blaster? I want to clean up my frame. I tried the Hotrodders Forum but no success there. I thought that since they do a lot of work with dirty and rusty parts that they may have a good idea. Not to be. Thanks for any help.

If you are doing this job yourself you need a healthy compressor too! I used a HF pressure tank blaster...Took some fiddling to get the air/sand ratio to work effectively. Also had to assemble the beast

But it was inexpensive. And boy what a mess blasting, might be good to figure a way to capture the used sand and re-use it. It is a LOT of work.

There are also companies using truck mounted blasters that come to you.

Not sure if all their equipment is made there, but it is good quality stuff. I've had one of their cabinet blasters and a portable pressure blaster for over 15 years and both have served me well.

Here is one.........http://www.texasblaster.com/?gclid=C...FQkFaQodQtEHoQ

Others are Brut and a few sold by Eastwood.

The USA made ones are $$$$ and they also require a good sized compressor (probably 5 hp or so).

Check your "yellow pages" or internet for sandblaster companies that may be in your area and consider using one of them. Here in Louisiana (near the water) we have quite a few. Then bring the frame to them and let them do the work.

Some years ago it was determined that sandblasting without breathing protection (respirator minimum, supplied breathing air preferred) will cause lung issues. That is why there are a lot fewer sandblasters for sale and a lot less sandblast facilities now compared to years ago. Too many health issues and $$$$$ lawsuits.

Blasting one time with a respirator should not hurt you, but when you factor in cost of equipment, etc I would recommend trying to farm the work out. But if you do, find a good company, and stay around to see how the job progresses. Inexperience and the wrong media or air pressure can create frame issues.

At one time, they sold some of the best..........probably what you have. I always used their equipment. But now I am not certain that they still sell pressure SANDBLAST units. Cabinets, yes, but the pressurized 100 lb fill tanks and associated nozzles and hoses probably are gone.....or sold as parts for older units.

If you are only doing one, pay some one, I bought the blaster ,killed my compressor, bought a $1700. compressor, bought more sand than the Jersey beach has, ran into more issues than I can remember, did the whole learning curve, oh, the real blast helmet, and gloves and resporater, lots of nozzles, and new hose cause sand wears through it,ect, ect, ect,. But now if I have something to blast I can do it. If I have to do a frame or anything larger than a rear housing, I will pay someone. I have a blaster from HF, and a dual blaster from Eastwood, tank is the same, wheels, handles, and gauge from HF are of less quality. Cost me a fortune to do it my self. Just saying!!!! Chip OH YEA it all started with a $100. dollar investment in a blaster

I checked their website, they do not offer portable units. Thanks.

I will probably be doing more than this frame. I have a couple of older vehicles that will need some clean-up also. So would rather purchase one to have rather than finding someone to come to me. I was thinking about using Walnut media and was going to try to capture it for re-use.

Whatever you do don't use silica sand, that will cause cancer.

If you sandblast, find slag sand.

Yea, that was my frame of mind also, have you checked the cost of walnuts per bag, i did a 12 bolt housing on Saturday that wasn't that bad, but took 250 lbs of sand to finish, I don't reclaim.(that takes hours over blast time), and spent close to three hours blasting.

Yes that is what I use silica sand or better known as play sand (play sand for our kids) with a painters resporater, because it's $20 to $30 dollars a bag cheaper, and I'm still upside down on this project. Chip

Infrequent use of silica sand with a respirator and blasting hood will probably not harm you, but don't get carried away and think you can do it all the time or without wearing the respirator.

The guys that do this for a living today in a recognized/responsible company use supplied breathing air. The reason is based on (medical) experience over the years.

FWIW

I go to federal supply and buy a garage can full of dry brown sand. Cost under 10 dollars. I made my own blaster using Tip's design. All you have to do is go to a salvage yard and find a cylinder. Weld a top and bottom threaded fitting, get hose and your in business..

Can you still buy silica sand? I haven't seen it for years.

The use of crystalline silica was prohibited in Great Britain in 1950 and in other European countries in 1966. Since 1974 the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the United States has recommended that silica sand be prohibited as an abrasive blasting material.
Workers' exposure to crystalline silica must be kept as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) below the exposure limits in Table 5-4 in the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

I appreciate the "do it your self" for convenience and future use, but it really is a PITA unless you build a containment area. I think you would be time and money ahead to farm out the big work, and buy a large blasting cabinet to do all the odds and ends stuff in the comfort of your garage.

Better have a big compressor. I have a 55cfm 15 hp three phase compressor and it runs almost continuous while using my outdoor blaster. I've done a couple frames with it and there's no way I will do another. Like everyone else has said, it's just not worth it when you consider the cost of electric, the huge mess and hassle. Have a guy up the road with a containment unit and diesel compressor who will do a frame for 200 bucks. If it doesn't fit in my cabinet it goes to him from now on.
