Default Problems with afb?

New to me 62 and having some issues. Carb keeps going dry on me. Try to start and nothing, no visible fuel squirting. I can get it running if I nurse it with squirting some fuel down the carb. After its going, it's fine until I shut it off and let it sit for a a couple of minutes. Go to start, it will fire up but quickly runs out of fuel. Carb issue? Fuel pump? Ideas?

Sounds like you have a sticking float. Put a new kit in it and freshen it up.

Found contributing factor today. Little fuel getting to carb. Went to change pump and found that the pivot, on the pumps lever, had worked its way out approx 75%. Still doesn't explain why fuel bowls are dry.

Is that, by any chance, an AirTex pump? They have a reputation for failing in the way you described.

Sounds to me like a bad accelerator pump if there is no visible fuel squirting just a short time after the car has run. Either that or an extreme case of fuel percolation in the fuel bowl.

Of course if the float is stuck or the pump is preventing the bowl from filling, the accelerator pump would be shooting blanks also.

I think the accelerator pump is ok. When there is fuel in the bowls it pumps fine. I think it's a combination of issues. The fuel pump not pumping enough at idle, along with the engine running of a few seconds at idle draining the bowls. I also think the there is a fuel percolation issue also.

It's a stock 327/340. Doesn't look like much room to put a fibre carb spacer on. Any idea what might help with the percolation?

Wasn't aware of the issue, but appears to be. Going to call them today.

The problem with AirTex pumps is a design issue.

That pivot pin is pressed into soft metal which will always creep in such a direction as to relieve any applied stress..... such as from a press fit part. One good solution would be for them to get rid of the press-fit pin and replace it with one retained by "E" clips. It will cost a little more but the failures will stop.

BTW, I suggest focusing your energy on replacing the fuel pump before spending any time diagnosing a carburetor problem. My hunch is that once your pump works properly, your other problems will cease to exist.
