Default Help Identify missing part

Need help from anyone who can identify my missing part from my '64 coupe. I've looked through catalogues etc and can't figure what's supposed to be there.

You can see from the 2 holes that it is something that looks like it has to be riveted. It is located on the passenger side transmission tunnel about a foot from firewall.

Here's a picture from the underside.

Thanks in Advance,
RK

Not sure what you're talking about with the exhaust heat shields having a mounting bracket, or is that another heat shield. Can you show a photo?

Thanks. Do those typically rust off and fall away?

can't say I have looked at enough cars to tell you yes or no. i would say like anything else it depends on where and how the car was used, or where it sat

Looks like they installed a new mount/bracket in the next photo after that rusty riveted bracket:

I just stole the pictures from google but if your doing a complete restoration and what everything to look new and shinny I would say it would be cheaper to buy new clips rather then to restore the original. I would also tend to think that when you bend the tangs over to remove the insulation that they would just snap off

Look carefully on the driver side of the tunnel. Do you have a retainer or holes in the same position/location as you shoe on the passenger side? If you do, then it is for a retainer (little thing with points) on the passenger side. There should be four total, two forward and two at the rear. If you do not have a match on the driver side, then someone may have drilled the holes for mounting something like a mobile phone holder on the passenger side. Dennis

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, but I already have 4 brand new tranny heat shield brackets already installed. In fact I have the tranny heat shield installed. I hope it fits with my new Tremec perfect fit.

You can see the front and rear brackets in the picture, but I'll post again below. The exhaust heat shields afix directly to the exhaust, so it's not for them.

These 2 holes appear only on the Passenger side of tranny tunnel. There are not any opposing / similar holes on the drivers side of the tunnel.

In this first picture it is a little hard to see the holes, but I'm posting it so you can see the tranny brackets and how far in front of heat shield these 2 holes are.

A closer picture, but you can still see both heat shield brackets installed.

Thanks,
RK

It's possible someone mounted a fire extinguisher there. Usually, they mounted in front of the passenger seat, but I'm wondering if that's a possibility to the right of the tunnel.

I agree on the fire extinguisher mounting. Those holes were way off the mark for the factory heat insulation attachment points. Dennis

Here's a corvettecentral diagram. RoadKing's looks too high (since the shield attaches at the bottom ends) and too far forward, and I'm sure when he installed the new ones he used the existing holes for front/rear.

Absolutely Correct. I have the heat shield installed....
I've owned the car for over 37 years and there never was a fire extinguisher, or anything else installed internally to the car.

These 2 holes look absolutely like they are Factory and I believe that it held 'something' on the underside of the car.

Example would be the speedo cable, but that is on the other side of the tunnel (and already in place).

Just so it's clear, here are some pictures showing the tranny heat shield installed, and yet the 2 holes I am inquiring about are located about 1 foot in front of the heat shield, and only on the passenger side of the tunnel.
Thanks again,
RK
