I would like to change the wheels out on my 66. What is the correct back spacing needed? I am un-informed (dumb) at this so I need help.
Steve
It depends on details. If you move the parking brake brackets from the sides to the tops of the trailing arms you gain a lot of room for additional backspacing. In the case of my 67, I went to 17X7 aftermarket wheels with 4.75" backspacing, which allows tires up to 245/45 size.
If you're looking for the original '66 offsets: steel wheels were 15x5.5 with a .44 offset; Aluminum knock-off wheels were 15x6 with a .61 offset.
Thanks for the reply. What I have on the car now is a set of old bolt-ons and I would like to go to some American 200S units. I like the looks of the "Daisy" wheel. I have to believe that there is a set of those that I can put on without altering the parking brake brackets.

How do you messure the backspacing on a wheel simple?
4,75" is that from the back of the rim to the part that meets the car?

Perfekt! And how much can you "backspace" on a 64 with drumbrakes front and back?
I don't know, but someone else here on the forum will. I have a 67 with 17-inch diameter wheels that are are 7 inches wide, with 4.75-inch backspacing and zero offset, but of course my car has disc brakes.
Back when I had drums on my 64 I had 15x10 rims with 3.75" backspace. The tire sidewall was uncomfortably close to my leaf spring. But I never had a problem. The new trailing arms with disc brakes moved the wheels out a bit. The 200S wheel cleared the new calipers. Now I am running 17s by ET.
