Default Poor Vent Window Fit!

One of my "winter projects" last winter was to "restore" my vent windows on my '66 roadster. The passenger side vent window frame had a "chip" out of it where the top vent window pin fit into the frame at the top. So . . . a few years ago I bought a used frame on ebay and last winter had it re-chromed and restored the vent windows with new rubber seals and reassembled everything. As you can see in the photo below, the fit of the window in the frame is less than perfect - in fact, because of the tight fit @ the top, the vent window does not want to close all of the way. It almost looks as if the vent window needs to be adjusted up within the frame, and the bottom needs to move rearward in the frame. But . . . I'm not sure I can get the rearward adjustment. Has anybody else had this issue - and is there a fix that I'm not thinking of?

Thanks everybody!

Tom

I think what you are dealing with is typical of installing new vent window weatherstripping. When I restored my car I had the same condition and I had to give them a helping hand when trying to crank them shut (push them closed). As the weatherstripping takes a set over time they should improve. However, it's been awhile since I last opened mine and I'm not sure how much better they are now.

Thanks Dan for the reply . . . I think that may be part of the issue. I did the same thing to the driver's side assembly, and it took several months before I could close that vent window all the way, and it still takes a "helping hand", but the passenger side is not cooperating! In comparing the 2 windows, it seems like the driver's side is higher within the frame itself - by @ 1/8th of an inch. I may try raising it a little and see if that helps.

If you can figure out a way to shim it higher that might help. From memory the upper pivot is riveted - maybe my memory is faulty. But you know GM back in the 60s - an eight of an inch is close enough for American cars - good to go. Of course the 70s were even worse. But, that's another subject.

Same thing happened to me. The driver side went in just fine. The passenger side was a problem (same as yours, I think). I got frustrated and threw the cover over the car and thought that I would deal with it the next spring (5 month, or so away). When I woke the car up from its winter nap, the darn thing fit perfectly.
